Are you waiting for things to be perfect?

Progress and Perfection are not the same thing. There is not one thing in my life that I do to perfection.

  • I love to sing, but I’m not a perfect singer.
  • I love to dance with my kids, but I’m not a perfect dancer. (this I don’t even do in public ;)
  • I’m not a gourmet chef, but I manage to keep my family fed.
  • I’m for sure not a perfect wife, a perfect parent or a perfect daughter. (I AM an awesome sister, but my brothers assure me I’m not perfect)

Guess what? I do those things anyway and I’m still effective!

Can you focus on being profitable and not perfect?

I’m not perfect in my business. My products and my courses, my videos, and my speeches are not perfect, but they’re getting out there and they’re getting done and they’re profitable.

Now, I don’t mean that you can do things half way. You do need to be polishing your skills and working on your craft and honing what you do.

There has to be a balance in ‘perfecting’ & producing!

I wouldn’t be very effective if I didn’t get better and better every time. (I’m a much better mom with #4 than I was with #1 and I’m a much better teacher than my very first class)

I do want you to focus on earning while you’re learning and I want you to never stop learning. But, don’t get caught in analysis paralysis. I don’t want you to say, “Until I figure it all out I can’t do anything. Until I know exactly what I’m doing with steps C, D, and E I can’t do A and B.”

That will just keep you frustrated AND broke! What do YOU think? Been there? Done that?

Find yourself crippling productivity by ‘figuring it all out’ first?

P.S. If you are interested in hanging with a group that is learning WHILE they’re earning, Paul Evans & I lead a popular DIY Workshop series. You might want to check it out ;)

Been there, done that.. and I finally threw out the T-shirt!  Thanks for the reminder Carrie.  You’ll never know how many times I hear your voice inside reminding me of something you’ve shared along the way that I need at the moment.

Carrie, I love what you have to say, I have been reading your stuff for couple of months now. I am in the process of learning about marketing. Whats funny is just about 5 minutes ago I realized that you have that DIY workshop series. So I guess the takeaway here is marketing does work and it does take time.

Thanks for all you do Carrie,

Really great post. I’m a major proponent of learning by doing, getting feedback, and improving based on that feedback. I used it when I developed websites and I use it now that I’m doing freelance writing. There’s no better teacher than experience!

You are so right Corey! What if we waited to have kids until we figured

Some say practice makes perfect, but if you never step on the playing field and perform, what’s the point?

Hi Carrie. This is a very timely post for me. I particularly loved the FB quote you included from Shirley, “Are you spending so much time studying the best way to do things that you aren’t finding time to do them?” This is me! Even though I love studying and learning new things, I keep putting off the things that bring me real joy, as well as success. Thanks for the nudge. ; } -JoAnn

I think I’ve had this problem since the moment I graudated college. Knew I wanted to be in business for myself but not sure how to make that happen and always waiting to have more seed funding, more spare time, more space for an office, the list… goes… on! You and others that have pointed out that getting started with something is the first step to find success and I need to get to steppin so that I can learn to walk and then run!

Carrie, this is a SUPER post! Perfection. Yeah, right! Perfectionism is such an enemy. It creeps into so many areas of our lives. We have to be on guard! It would be interesting to know how many things we could accomplish if we didn’t TRY to be perfect or if we didn’t put them off until everything in our lives is perfect. We want to reach for our dreams, but perfectionism holds us back from those very things that we really want. It keeps us stuck! I love that this post just feels like a nice, swift kick in the tail to get moving and running the race set before us. Thanks for keeping us fired up, moving, and on the right track! Hugs!

So true! Tweaking is dangerous. You can tweak one thing and not realise you’ve made something else wrong somewhere else! Your first thoughts were most likely your best.

Congratulations on recording reading your book aloud!  (I doubt anyone could read “perfectly” for 12 hours!)  Thanks for being an example of giving your best to benefit others!  Sometimes it’s not so hard once I dive in and just do it–whatever “it” is!  :)   Abundant blessings to you and yours!

  • http://greenandprofitable.com Shel Horowitz-Green Marketer

And the funny thing is, you *become* better by going out and doing to the best of your ability. What you thought at the time was approaching perfection, you can reflect back in a year or two and think how much better you could have done it with what you know now. Oddly enough, a couple of hours ago, I just tweeted this quote by JM Barrie (who wrote Peter Pan): “”I’m not young enough to know everything.” -James Matthew Barrie” – seems very relevant.

Hmm, guilty.  Recently realised though that my perfectionism aka procrastination was serving me in a warped way as once I let it go and allowed myself to move forward with my business and actually make it a success ‘things were gonna change around here’ – it is our subconscious mind simply keeping us ‘safe’.  I just had to get clear that my ‘safe’ was NOT serving me despite it ironically serving others around me (always being there for kids, husband, friends, family) etc.  Had to get very clear on the benefits of moving forwards and taking the plunge, getting out there has become easier.

Love it Carrie! Another great reminder of the power of getting things done. Practice even though it is not perfect – get it out there and get it done. Love your encouraging words and the way you inspire others to reach their full potential and to reach for their business profts they desire. Keep it up and never stop reminding us to continually implement! You are a gem :-)

Hi Carrie, Great post!  I think you are right, too many people waste time fussing about making everything perfect, when just getting out there and getting your voice geard is a much better use of peoples time.

    absolutely!

Great point! I struggle with this big time. I’ve got a business partner now that’s a “grip it and rip it” kind of guy, and it’s been a God send. He helps to balance me out, and at the same time I’m improving myself.

  • Carrie Wilkerson

    Sounds like a great balance!!
