the power of a great question! My answer: people who want to learn how to do finance better

  • http://www.facebook.com/AngelArts Dana Beasley

Great question, Carrie! I am defining that more and more! I just realized yesterday that I need to find fellow moms who are just starting out to have a work at home business. In fact, these women don’t even know what their business should be! These women are experiencing financial hardship and are looking for ways to go from Broke to Blessed. Which is how I connect to them because that’s what I do–help them to create a business based on their passions, connect this with their target audience, and build an effective brand image based on those two factors. Then I help them develop a strategic brand marketing plan.

You were instrumental in helping me to develop this course I’m launching! Thanks for your constant inspiration!

ps Finding the right market came with prayer. I asked God, “Who needs my course?” Then He revealed the answers! He also is answering my prayers about what, where, when, why and how to connect with my market. It’s a daily adventure being led by Him step by step! He’s my boss and the best boss there ever could be!

further advice, if I may… make sure you very clearly quantify ‘better’ — better and good isn’t enough. What is the bottom result? Higher ROI? cleaner books? less fear of audits? less expenses? less duplication? what is the ‘better’ — when you get ultra clear on that – it makes a huge difference.
“Dr. I want to feel better” can mean so many things ;)

    Thanks David!

I am serving people with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other weight related health issues. I plan to reach them through health fairs and Facebook, but I’m not sure how to connect with them online.

  • Anonymous

a blog like this would be a great start Melissa! and go to Facebook and ‘search’ for groups that might be related to the same topics – get involved with those and eventually point them to your blog

one caution with using ‘broke’ is that if you label them as such, they will also have permission to not invest with you.

also – when building businesses, I like to consider their experience and skillsets – they may be passionate about ceramic unicorns, but it doesn’t mean that is a viable model for them ;)

    So proud of you!

Who wants what I have?  Caregivers of aging parents and loved ones – but I was having trouble reaching them.  My shift in how to reach them has changed.  I plan to propose to human resource managers and insurance companies that it would be beneficial to add as a benefit to their subscribers, the ability to connect with other caregivers via a membership site which is high on education.  Caregiving of aging parents is costing businesses a huge amount of money in lost time and productivity.

    Great food for thought, Carrie.

I would suggest that there are two questions within your question: Wants and needs. I may need food and shelter, but not a $500,000 home. Needs have a stronger pull than a want, but both a need and a want provide a synergistic affect to a customer.

    Thanks for sharing, Carrie.

I think I might have to disagree with you. Many folks need vegetables, but invest in chocolate instead. They need insurance, but use discretionary income for satellite tv and cell phones. They need repairs in their home, but choose to invest in new clothes, dinners out and more.

They need solid business acumen, but they buy ‘instant solutions and trick softwares’

They need solid exercise, but they buy diet pills.

But more to the point, my question is about when you are offering a ‘solution’ to your audience…make sure there is a market for it. Make sure you have access to them and them to you. Make sure you can connect them.
I never suggest my clients ask themselves ‘what do your clients NEED?’ — because a need is not always enough to get a prospect interested, engaged and investing.

Ideally, we choose need over want. But in most cases, I think many override that with desires and wants. And what they want is a solution to _______________ (which is where you step in for your market)

I am serving high school students who want to improve their college admissions options by increasing their SAT scores.  I teach test taking strategy, academic content for the reading, math, and writing sections, and stress / expectation management.

I am also serving parents of students grades 7-12 as they search for solid college planning information.  There is a lot of hype surrounding college planning / admissions and I want students and families to know that with a little advance planning, the process is so much easier.

and you do a great job ;) Em signed up for her sophomore ‘practice’ SAT for October! gonna email you for a few OVER view tips LOL

What I’m saying is that it is not an “either/or” question, but a “both” or an “and” question. When a person wants a 1/4 inch hole drilled, they need a 1/4 inch drill bit. An alcoholic wants another drinks, but they need to sober up. Our purpose in life is a business people is not to sell snake oil, but provides a customer something that truly benefits them. My comment is from a business ethic and a moral one. I’d rather sell a solution that satisfies both a need and a want, then you have a hit, like dark chocolate that is healthy for you. :-) Thanks for the discussion.

  • Anonymous

totally right! the mistake comes when folk get so wrapped up in a ‘need’ that they feel passionate about – they ignore when there is no access to the market or matching desire from the market!

    Thought-provoking thanks!

No snake oil here – AGREED!

  • http://www.MacStartup.com KevinCu

Never even considered you sold snake oil. :-) As I have a quote in my book (won’t plug it here, it’s your blog), “fall in love with the purpose of your business, not the business of your idea.” My book changed three times since I started it, and just as you say, my business purpose didn’t change, but my business idea did. Keep it up, Carrie.

I agree Carrie because we have to look no further than our friends, neighbors, and sometimes ourselves to see how wants tend to cause a rationalized minimization of needs.

Great question Carrie. My answer: providing small business owners the “gift” of time to grow their businesses by providing business management/VA/SM services. I know these owners are out there (have helped a few friends), not sure how I should be connecting with owners who are not friends.

I am serving any woman between the ages of 40 and 60 who has ever felt less than because she procrastinates.  It is usually because we tend to put everyone’s needs ahead of our own.

I want to connect with these women as I create a series of products that, without judgement, help them determine what they really want and how to go about getting it.

I also serve them, in a different way, as a Virtual Consultant for those women who own small businesses and need to navigate the internet in search of new relationships and creating content marketing for them.

Thanks for the suggestion. Good advice. I hadn’t thought of that! I will keep that in mind about the broke label. I just got so much excitement when I used it!

And absolutely, I take into consideration not only passions, but skills, talents, life experiences, values, personality, special needs… It’s very comprehensive!

    Blessings to you!

  • Tate Besso

This is a very timely question for me as I am a newbie still in the development stages of trying to figure out a product to launch. My idea that I have is a resource for parents to use to instill healthy eating habits in toddlers, so before McDonalds even gets their hands on them. My base would be time pressed mothers who are concerned about their child’s nutrition, but do not have alot of time. Any suggestioms in terms of format Carrie??

  • Anonymous

Start with a blog. Share articles, videos and relevant research. You will have to educate before they are open to options

Rather than creating your own product, you might consider affiliating with others who are doing this already and intro your audience to them
    But blog is step 1

Hi Carrie, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your audio book.  Many thanks – very inspiring.  However, I didn’t take many notes (will listen to it again and takes notes on 2nd pass), you mention a website for resrouces in your conclusion but the site has no content.  Any plans to add the resources you mentioned in your audiobook?

Is it my imagination or do most people who make a lot of money online are in the business of teaching others how to make money online? What if that is not your niche? Is it still possible to make money online?

  • Carrie Wilkerson

My clients are in a whole variety of things: fitness, scrapbooking, golf, menus, gardening, medical, finding jobs, writing, Bible studies, adoption, debt recovery, nutrition and more.

You ‘notice’ more of the ‘how to make $’ because you are studying that.

  • http://twitter.com/Chris_Eh_Young Chris Eh Young

It’s been my experience that even the people who say they want what you have tend to change their minds come money transfer time.
I spent months building a community. I asked them what product they wanted. They told me exactly what they wanted. I built it, handed it over to them, and none of them bought it.
I offered to give it to them for a donation to charity. 109 people downloaded the product, 2 made an actual donation. So much for the honour system.
Just to prove this wasn’t a fluke, I repeated the process 7 more times. I built 8 products that people wanted and all combined, sold a handful.

  • Carrie Wilkerson

Right. Who is willing to pay for what you can offer. Better question!

  • http://twitter.com/Chris_Eh_Young Chris Eh Young

That was my thought when I first started studying this industry too. The easy way to spot those who mean well and those who are just in it for the buck are to look for guarantees. If someone says they’ll guarantee it’s the easiest way to make money, run. If they tell you up front, like Carrie does, that it will take time, effort, work, they’re the real deal.

The lessons Carrie teaches translate offline as well. Use the strategies to market and grow your business using both online and offline tools.

  • Carrie Wilkerson

    Thanks Chris!
