The book, The Paradox of Choice, is all about how it is so difficult for people to make decisions when there are too many choices. It basically says that many times, people are more likely to make a decision when there are fewer choices. I've actually used a few of the tips in that book in my own life when it comes to making decisions, but I hadn't thought about using it in my business. I'm definitely going to start simplifying more, because it's difficult for the business owner as well as the consumer when there are too many options.

I think I'm congenitally incapable of having only one focus--so I have several that overlap (green marketing, green living, book publishing, book marketing, small business marketing). But I do reduce the confusion by giving them separate websites.

Oh my goodness, you are speaking right at me today!!! I'm working right now on finding the niche I am dedicated to serving. I've been grabbing customers and coaches from all over the place recently, and my business has come to a standstill (and is even losing people) because of my jumping around.
I have to go back to basics and concentrate on my niche. Gotta start growing again - and soon!!
Thanks SO much for your insight, Carrie! Always love hearing what you have to say!! :-)

Yes this does help - an additional tool to use when trying to make the right decision. I am stuck right now and this exercise combined with Carrie's questions will help me narrow things down.

I think sometimes we try to make things too difficult and then end up not doing anything because we can't get started.

Thanks for your help!

I totally understand Sharon and Carrie is such an expert at this. I have found that doing what is called a "Bubble Sort" is a great help at narrowing the focus (I'm a total expert at doing what Carrie says not to do...smile). When I did this process with a client last week, she said what she wanted to do next was so clear.

It's similar to what you do at the eye doctor. When he says "which is clearer, A or B).

To do this:

Make a list of the things you want to do (3 x 5 cards are great for this)
Take two things and compare them
Which of the two would you choose
Now take the one you chose and compare it to the next one on the list (or card)
Do this until you have no more items on your list

Hint: make sure each item is distinct and there are no "ands".

Then put that item through another sort by asking the questions Carrie had. You may LOVE something like shoeing horses. Practically speaking, is there enough of a market to make a living doing that or could that be a sideline that you enjoy because the rest of your business is generating income.

I've spent years fighting the choice. Believe me, it wasn't a wise thing to choose!

Hope this helps a bit.
