If It Steals Your Time, It Is Stealing Your Money Too

The 3rd Obstacle Business Owners listed in their responses was ‘I’m Out of Time!’

To get caught up, read Obstacle #1 – Info Overload and #2  – Distractions

You’re primarily out of time (in my opinion) because your time is being stolen from you! You always suspected it…someone else is taking my time!! So I call this obstacle:

Time Stealers

All those little demands on your time are as pleasant as being pecked to death by a chicken! (Feel that? Great visual, huh?)

They’re little nips that irritate you at first and then they really start to hurt and you start to lose BIG chunks of you. Eventually it’s a miserable death (of your dreams, your goals and your health.)

Is that just me or can you relate to that too?

This is the similar to “money stealers.” (Don’t even get me started. I have a whole list of those, too.)

Some of these are going to hit a nerve with you and some might not apply. I’ll be as comprehensive as possible ;)

  • Incoming phone calls
  • Text messages
  • Emails
  • Social Media
  • Skype & Instant Messaging
  • People on your team (Kind of counter-intuitive but it’s true.)
  • Blogs
  • Technology
  • Errands
  • Kids/Spouses/Parents
  • Jobs (or Clients)
  • Love Life
  • Television
  • Meal time
  • Drive Time
  • Meetings without a clear purpose
  • Networking without a clear purpose

These are the top ones I’m aware of…but truthfully, anything incoming, unscheduled and without a clear purpose qualifies.

It seems harmless enough at first…I’ll pop into my emails, I’ll grab that call really quick and before you know it – your day (week, month, quarter) has dissolved into thin air! Stolen by the time stealers!

  • But, Carrie – we have to eat!
  • But, Carrie – the phone is part of my business!
  • But, Carrie – you use social media extensively!

RIGHT!! Lots of the above are necessary. Absolutely! But we are going to learn in the next post about Time Stretchers. Making the things above work for you instead of against you and how not to live the life of a self-sacrificial workaholic.

Some of you think you have to give up everything in order to grow your business. That’s not true. I have a very fun and fulfilling life.  You can have your cake and eat it too. It’s just a matter of knowing how to plan it out and manage it. How to be PROactive and not REactive.

Be mindful of the 3 or 4 that are the biggest culprits for you. None of this is brain surgery, it’s just being self-aware.

“Yep, the phone just rang. I picked it and it just stole 30 minutes out of my day.” Now you are aware and can schedule differently.

Time Stretcher Example: I stopped taking incoming phone calls personally. They go to an office phone. I do all my coaching, interviews, networking calls and the like by prescheduled appointments on the days that I set.

Let me make one BIG conclusion for you. If it’s stealing your time and you’re working for yourself then it’s taking money out of your wallet.

Tomorrow’s post we’ll talk about solutions and what I call Time Stretchers! But today, leave a comment below about some of the ‘stealers’ that are common for you and how you are going to be more aware and schedule around those!

Carrie I love this post! I’m so glad I’m not the only one. I don’t do unscheduled phone conversations either. My friends know this. I even schedule my “girl talk” calls. Also if I’m on a tight deadline I try to eat stuff that I can eat while I work. Yeah that sounds obsessive, but no one ever became successful without work.

What I would love to see are some suggestions and solutions on how to manage and/or advise a client to manage their social media when they don’t know how.  I know “what” needs to be done, but I don’t have bandwidth to do it. Some say outsource it, but how do you find the right person or people that would understand the product well enough to handle those types of things?  OR, which things would THEY handle, and which things would still fall on the shoulders of the client at first?  ADVICE?  Point me somewhere?  Thanks!

hey Christine – this really isn’t going to contribute to this blog post
specifically – but would you post this exact question over at
    http://Facebook.com/BarefootExecutive – we’ll get some great community
    feedback there!!

I read this because I loved the rooster pic.  Truthfully I only read about 1/50 of the things I am subscribed to as I am so overwhelmed by information.    To steal back time I have just unsubscribed to everything in my inbox and am now going to try a couple of weeks unplugged so I can just focus on what is in front of me. Thanks Carrie for the suggestion.  I am already feeling enlightened!

Wahooo!! and over the next few weeks, you will find more things come to your
inbox that you’ve forgotten!! Keep unsubbing!!

For me, my time stealers are: 1.) Social Media, 2.) the phone, 3.) co-workers.

I’ve learned to block out time for #1 – I use a timer to manage my time spend on tasks. Once things are done, I’ll allow myself some time. #2 – I don’t take calls any more. Unless of course it’s scheduled time. Not to be rude or anything, but often times, phone calls lead to chit-chat that takes up far too much valuable time. In regards to #3 – I put myself on DND. No offense, I love my team, but sometimes (a lot of times), there’s work that needs to get done and it’s not gonna do itself. Just sayin’…

    Totally agree sir!

Hi Christine – Just spotted your post and may be able to help. I’ve got a step-by-step plan for social media & online tech that may be handy for your client. I’ll try and message you directly :-) Jo

I would add clutter to the list of time stealers. Can make it difficult to find things but also prays on the mind. When my space is tidy and organised I get so much more done. Sadly it doesn’t take much dashing from one appointment/activity to the next for the clutter to accumulate again!

you are SO RIGHT!! My friend @AnnVertel always says – if you feel
disorganized, clean out your purse first ;) It’s often a symptom of bigger
    chaos :) GUILTY!

Love the article, Carrie!  I have a tough time staying hopelessly devoted to one project at a time. Definitely a time stealer for me. I have so many ideas swirling around in my head, it’s just too fun!  I have now unsubscribed to everything from everyone.  I  have chosen just one mentor (you) to work with over the next year.  I am learning so much from FYS information and past lessons that you have shared.  Focused creation time, intentional power hour, and weekly schedule has helped.  Looking forward to more fab ideas!

Love it Lissa and I don’t take that lightly. Thank you for the honor of
    mentoring you!

Wow, some great comments here! My purse isn’t cluttered, but I have little NOTES everywhere in my office. What good are they if I forget what they are for!?  And in tune with the other blog post about unsubscribing… some hard decisions (kind of like cleaning out your closet of clothes you haven’t worn in a year)… but it’s starting to feel GREAT to unsubscribe.  After all this time online, I am realizing that I have just as much or more to offer than some of the lists I’m on!  Carrie remains though!  LOL

  • Anonymous

Mmmmwa! Thanks Christine! And look how those other lists have been
    confidence builders for you! LOL

Could not agree more!  I started scheduling all phone calls a number of years ago and it has been critical to my success.  As I talk with my clients the top 2 time saver suggestions I give them are:  1) let it go to voicemail/receptionist (you can outsource that work too) 2) turn off your email/smartphone notification sound.  Simple interruptions cost you a lot more than you think.  Studies show that for every interruption, it will take you 20-45 minutes to get back to the same state of concentration you had before the interruption.

It is really hard for most to let those things go because “what if I miss something important?”  I can honestly say that I have never missed something important.  I do make exceptions to the phone answering rule — I am first emergency contact for my son, so those numbers are not blocked.  My husband only calls for critical items so I also answer his calls.  All others are scheduled on my online scheduling tool.
    To your success!
    Stephanie

love this! as a reader said to me recently… ‘I’m not selling lungs or
hearts, no one will die if I don’t take their call!” LOL

  • Melodie

I’m with you Christine!  Unsubscribing became my biggest activity last week.  There is only so much one can learn before they need to take steps to implement what they learned!  So here goes…..

Good food for thought Carrie. I’ve been wondering what that nagging feeling I feel was all this time… now I know it’s the same feeling I’d have if I were “being pecked to death by a chicken” ;-)

I always try remind myself I’ve got a choice to live by chance, or choice. When I plan, and do my dead-level best to work that plan I’m living by choice, when I do many of things you mentioned in the post well, I’m pretty much just waiting for things to happen — or living by chance.

I appreciate all the good work you do.

    Josh :-)

  • Carrie Wilkerson

isn’t that the most descriptive phrase ever???

  • http://www.getmotivation.com joshhinds

If it isn’t, it’s darn close to it.. haha :-)
