The Road to Your Success

Success – it is so much more than economic stature, titles, degrees, it involves all aspects of your life.  It is important to be able to define who you are, where you are going, how you are going to get there, your destination and the road to that destination.  Once this is determine you can visualize, or see your success right before your eyes.

Let’s begin with identifying Who You Are.

  • When you introduce yourself or someone else introducing you they usually will give your name and sometimes where you are from, but does that truly say Who you are? In order to answer that question you need to look closely at your beliefs, values, and principles aside from professional, cultural and economic status.  Reflecting on your experiences will give you insights on your good or bad traits, knowledge, skills as well as your strengths and weaknesses.  Once you have reflected on these values, you can then determine who you are, what you stand for and what you plan to do in your life to accomplish your goals.

Now it’s time to determine your destination - Where Are You Going (Want to Be)

  • You must first know who you are and once that is determined you will have a clearer idea of what you want to be.  You will know what you must change such as attitudes and habits to get where you want to go.  If you don’t know yourself, your vision and targets for the future will be unclear.  Your destination should cover all the aspects of your being; physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.

How will you get there – What is Your Mission?

  • How will you get there can also be described as your mission.  However, your mission depends on what you know about yourself.  When you know, truly know about yourself, you will be able to choose your mission.  If for instance your mission is to help others or you choose to dedicate yourself to serving others, you must know this in order to be successful in your chosen mission.

What is Needed and Required

  • You must have knowledge, skills and attitudes to reach your vision.  You need to assess what knowledge you have, the skills you may need to acquire and the attitudes that may need to be changed or enhanced to attain your vision.

The Road You Must Take

  • Planning out your life, requires that you know the landmarks or roads you must take.  The landmarks are the measures of your success.  The measures must be specific, attainable, realistic and time bound.  You must be very realistic in determining these measures.  Wanting two entirely different things or visions may be destructive in that you may not reach either because of the unrealistic measures placed upon yourself.  You must prepare yourself for detours or unanticipated turns on your road to success.  You will want to minimize the hasty and spur-of-the-moment decisions that will merely just make you lose your way.

Like any road, there will be detours and so will your road to success.  However, if your mission or goal is to succeed in your chosen path, then you must anticipate them and adjust accordingly.  Never let them interfere and lead you away from the path to success you have chosen.  It can be accomplished and only with you will power, knowledge and persistence will it be done.
