Women Owned Business in the United States

Did you know that many of the businesses owned in the United States are owned by women?

  • 10.1 million firms are owned by women (50% or more), employing more than 13 million people, and generating $1.9 trillion in sales as of 2008.
  • Three quarters of all women-owned businesses are majority owned by women (51% or more), for a total of 7.2 million firms, employing 7.3 million people, and generating $1.1 trillion in sales.
  • Women-owned firms (50% or more) account for 40% of all privately held firms.

Businesses Owned by Women of Color

  • 1.9 million firms are majority-owned (51% or more) by women of color in the U.S.
  • These firms employ 1.2 million people and generate $165 billion in revenues annually.
  • Between 2002 and 2008, these firms grew faster than all privately held firms.

Million Dollar Businesses

  • One in five firms with revenue of $1 million or more is woman-owned.
  • 3% of all women-owned firms have revenues of $1 million or more compared with 6% of men-owned firms.

    I believe that women are best equipped to run a business because they have to multitask to keep a household functioning. That means, to me, that women would be best at running a country, also. They would be good, no excellent, at running a country if they used both rational and intuitive methods. Unfortunately, if they use their masculine side too much, they’re considered a bxxtcch. It’s still a double standard operating but that is slowly giving way to recognizing the worth of all.

  3. During the Great Depression women kept families together by taking jobs men would not do.

    Now women do home based businesses that start out earning pennies per hour and then grow… Could that be because many men won’t start at that spot?

    Or could it be that more women are willing to wear all the hats in a business while it grows? You know – manufacturer, sales person, bookkeeper, and cleaning crew rolled into one.
